Allegheny Airlines, founded in 1939, played a significant role in regional air transportation in the eastern United States. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the airline operated from 1952 to 1979, connecting cities primarily in the East.
A Forerunner to US Airways
Allegheny Airlines became a forerunner of USAir, which later evolved into US Airways. In 1979, after the Airline Deregulation Act was passed, Allegheny changed its name to USAir. Over the next decade, USAir acquired Piedmont, expanding its reach.
Joining the Jet Age
Allegheny Airlines entered the jet age in 1966 when it introduced the McDonnell Douglas DC-9. This move modernized its fleet and improved passenger experiences.
Advance Flight Reservations
While Allegiant Airlines currently recommends passengers make flight reservations in advance, Allegheny Airlines did not require advance purchase or airline tickets. This practice provided flexibility for travelers.
Legacy and Merger
Allegheny Airlines ceased operations in 1979. Its legacy lives on as part of the rich history of aviation in the United States. In 2013, US Airways merged with American Airlines, creating one of the largest airlines in the world.
