Magnitude 4.1 quake strikes near Ridgecrest

Updated January 5, 2024 at 4:11 p.m.

A light 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck in Southern California on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was centered about 10 miles north of Ridgecrest, California, and was felt as far away as Los Angeles.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. However, the quake is a reminder of the potential for a major earthquake in Southern California.

In 2005, the U.S. Geological Survey released a report that said there is a 75% chance of a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake striking Southern California within the next 30 years.

Residents of Southern California should be prepared for the possibility of a major earthquake. This includes having a plan in place, stocking up on supplies, and knowing what to do in the event of an earthquake.
