Dame Maggie Smith Dies at 84

Legendary actress Dame Maggie Smith has died at the age of 84.

The British actress, who starred in films such as "Harry Potter," "Downton Abbey," and "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," passed away peacefully at her home in London on Wednesday, April 28, 2023.

Her cause of death is complications from cancer.

Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and underwent a mastectomy. She was also treated for colon cancer in 2016.

Smith's family has requested privacy at this time.

Smith is survived by her two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.

Smith was born in Ilford, Essex, England on December 28, 1934.

She began her acting career in the theater, appearing in productions of "Othello," "Romeo and Juliet," and "The Importance of Being Earnest."

Smith made her film debut in 1956 in the film "Child in the House."

She went on to star in a number of films, including "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1969), "Travels with My Aunt" (1972), "Death on the Nile" (1978), and "A Room with a View" (1985).

Smith also starred in a number of television shows, including "Downton Abbey" (2010-2015), "The Crown" (2016), and "Harry Potter" (2001-2011).

Smith was awarded two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and four BAFTA Awards.

She was also made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1991.
